Forbes: The Schools That Are Creating A New Wave Of Educating Future Leaders
2020 has been a tumultuous ride, three months in, and the world has already had to deal with Brexit moving forward, the stand-off between Iran and America, and the pandemic of Covid 19. When we talk about leaders operating in a VUCA environment, this is it, and not a drill. Handling volatile and rapidly changing settings requires leaders to take bold decisions that may or may not be popular. Sitting on the fence is not an option. Yet, under normal circumstances, case studies demonstrate the impact of inertia, dithering, timid decisions leading to the gradual but inevitable decline of businesses. Change can be gradual and sometimes unimaginable, as was the case with Kodak or weakened business structure catalyzed by extreme forces, as illustrated by the recent collapse of FlyBe. When I'm teaching MBA students, the discussion usually coalesces on the question, "what is a leader?" More recently, our discussions evolve into "how do you lead?" This view pivots leadership to a state of being; in other words, how do you show up? How do you make decisions? How do you ensure your colleagues and teams trust you? How do you respond to uncertainty?
